Anyway, I am posting here because I have new art to share. Good for you, because it is the only thing that actually motivates me to write here. This one might require some explanation. First off, it is a political cartoon. So right off the bat you know it is not going to be particularly funny. The law school here at Duke has it's own paper, The Devil's Advocate (clever, eh?), and I am planning on doing a comic for them. I am not really sure what direction I will end up taking it, but this first one at least is about Supreme Court news.
In order to understand the... not joke. Purpose? Meaning? Anyway, in order to understand the cartoon, you need to know something about current important Supreme Court cases. Last year District of Columbia v. Heller was decided. It applied the 2nd amendment to individuals instead of just Militias. It was a huge case, but it left some big unanswered questions. Because the case was from the district, the Court completely ignored the issue of whether their decision applied to state gun control regulations. They didn't need to address the issue, as the district is not a state. That is where the upcoming case McDonald v. Chicago comes in. If you want to read up about it, the wikipedia article is an ok place to start, but there are a lot of good articles on the case out there if you plug it into google.
McDonald is important because of the reasoning it is calling for. McDonald is asking the court to find that the privileges or immunities clause of the 14th amendment applies the bill of rights to the states, effectively overturning the Slaughter-House cases. I won't go any more into it, but if you know anything about Constitutional law, this is pretty big. In any case, the cartoon:

As I said, not particularly funny, and incredibly safe. But I do like the disgruntled states dog. Anyway, it was my first cartoon. They are bound to get better. Maybe I will actually make them funny in the future! It will probably be easier when I have more experience at the law school to draw upon. Anyway, thanks for your time and as always all comments and criticisms are appreciated!
